Interior and exterior decorative solution

Mouldings and ornaments, the decorating products of your dreams! How can we explain the renewed enthusiasm in recent years for indoor and outdoor moulding? Some designers attribute this vogue to the fact that Canadians are traveling more and more and visiting historic monuments where decorative moulding is omnipresent. People think : "why not try that on our house", and they fall in love with various styles - baroque, renaissance, colonial, Victorian.

A love for moulding that persists down through the ages. Looking back to ancient times, we can see how the Greco-Roman civilization made extensive use of moulding. Their whole architecture is imbued with it. Arabic art also demonstrates a fine utilization of dentil friezes creating an impression of lightness.

In Quebec we find these plaster ornaments appearing mainly in institutional buildings towards the end of the 18th century.

Many of us remember the homes of our grandparents and great grandparents, with walls adorned by magnificent plaster moulding according to 19th century fashion. These houses still survive and their owners are determined to preserve this rich heritage.

The Second World War was a watershed, a period of serious restrictions. With the end of the war, people came back to life, giving birth to Art Deco. This very simplistic style, radically changed consumers expectations. The use of moulding yielded to large bare spaces.

Little by little, the taste for moulding is coming back. Designers love to use moulding. Some even say it is like working with dentil.

"These fine details add a great finishing touch to a room, softening the angles and considerably modifying the atmosphere", explains Suzanne Pitre, teaching assistant in the Interior Design department of CEGEP du Vieux Montréal College, in an interview published in the newspaper La Presse.

Molding can be used to change the dimensions of a room, for example, giving an oversized room a more intimate feeling. Creating a new atmosphere, playing with forms and colors, obtaining novel effects --moulding and ornaments can do it all.
